Webinar and CME: A Patient-Centered Approach to Concussion Care

We are pleased to announce that Concussion Alliance and Elizabeth Sandel, MD, have produced an educational program titled A Patient-Centered Approach to Concussion Care for Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Physicians. The program is also informative for other healthcare professionals, such as neurologists and physiatrists, and coaches and patients have appreciated the program as well. The learning activity is free, and is available as a 45-minute webinar is available here, and a 1-credit hour continuing medical education (CME) for emergency care department and primary care physicians, hosted by Med Learning Group.

The program features Dr. Sandel, a physiatrist and brain injury physician, and Concussion Alliance Executive Director Conor Gormally, who has experienced multiple concussions and persisting post-concussion symptoms (PPCS). In a video format, Dr. Sandel presents the most up-to-date recommendations "for expert, collaborative, and coordinated care that is accessible for patients in the acute phase after a concussion, and in the rehabilitation phase, if symptoms are persistent and chronic."

Conor Gormally, age 24, details his journey with multiple concussions and persisting symptoms to educate the viewer about the patient's experience. The program includes specific recommendations and links to provider and patient resources. Conor Gormally is the Co-Founder of Concussion Alliance and serves as the Executive Director and Concussion Education & Advocacy Internship Program Director.

Elizabeth Sandel, MD, is the author of Shaken Brain: The Science, Care, and Treatment of Concussion (Harvard University Press, 2020), and the presentation includes content and illustrations from her book. Dr. Sandel serves on the Concussion Alliance Leadership Team and Expert Advisory Board.

Malayka Gormally, Co-Founder and Director of Operations of Concussion Alliance, also provided input on the program's content. She is Conor's mother and has experienced first-hand the difficulties of navigating the medical system for patients with PPCS and their families.

We are currently working on producing a series of educational programming following the guidelines for best practices produced by the AMA Ed Hub.
